Statement and assumption

       First of all what is statement and assumption?  Statement is sentence that is stated, and assumption means assumed or to be supposed to take a grant from statement. 

       Statement and assumption includes consists of a statement which can be facts, discussions, observations, causes and effect, actions etc that followed by assumptions. Let’s look on simple example to understand on easy terms about what is statement and assumption

Statement : Double your money in One Year.

Assumptions : I. The Bank is not genuine. 

                        II. People want their money to grow.

  • Only assumption I is implicit
  • Only assumption II is implicit
  • Either I or II is implicit
  • Neither I nor II is implicit
  • Both I and II are implicit

       So now this is structure of statement and assumption questions which is asked on competitive, Bank, SSC and IBPS exams. What would be the answer? Guess it, bank is not genuine is not an assumption at all, its a common sense that every banks have their own propaganda to promote their products. so only assumption II is concluded with mentioned statement. 

Ans. is only assumption II is implicit

Another example of statement and assumption

Statement : “Picture will start at 6 pm. “You are requested to take your Tickets before 6 pm.

Assumptions :  (I) Picture will start as scheduled.

                          (II) If a Customer is not in his seat before 6 pm, the Picture will not start.

Ans. is only assumption I is implicit

Statement : “India won the toss and chooses to the bat first against Pakistan”

Assumption : (I) Moisture Might Be fallen at night 

                      (II) India is Playing with no spinners

Ans. is Both I and II are implicit 

Statement : "Satish Scores 96 runs in 56 balls against Pakistan at Dhaka"

Assumption : (I) Satish is From Gujarat

                      (II) Satish Have Strong muscles 

Ans. is neither I nor II is implicit

Tips & Tricks For statement and assumption —

  • Always find whether an assumption is implicit or not, by “Concentrating on statement”. Think from the perspective of the subject that saying the line in the statement.
  • Always be careful of the extreme words used in the sentence, such as, most, every, only, all, best, definitely etc. the statement are supposed to be read carefully to pick the right assumption. 

Rules: 

  1. Assumption is always Indefinite & Positive

  1. Some words like only, each, any, every, all, question indicating word ( why, these, what), Answer indicating words(there for), Definitely, But , Certainly exist in the assumption that assumption will always be explicit(False).
  2. Some words like some, to large extent, many, much , exist in the assumption that assumption will always be implicit(True).
  3. Any assumption that is conveying the message of advertisement , notice, appeal that assumption will always be implicit(True).
  4. Any assumption that is talking about the social welfare (positive) , govt. policies that assumption will always be implicit(True).
  5. If any assumption is talking about past & future that assumption will always be explicit (False).
  6. If any assumption showing the word like suggestion, order, request that will always be implicit (True). Restatement is never implicit.
  7. Comparison always wrong.

Example : 

1. Statement : Everybody loves reading adventure stories
    Assumption :

  1. Adventures stories are the only reading material.
  2. No body loves Reading any other material.

Ans. Both false

2. Statement : "If you want to study account join institute Y", A advice to B.
    Assumption :

  1. Institute Y provides good account education.
  2. B listen to A advice.

Ans. Both true

3. Statement : The college administration has instructed all the students to stop using cell phone within the college premises.  
   Assumption :

  1. The student may stop using cell phone in the college premises
  2. The student may continue to use cell phone in the college premises.

Ans. Only one

4. Statement : Read the Notice before entering the club
    Assumption :

  1. People are literate.
  2. Club is not for blind person.

Ans. Both true

5. Statement : ABC is the only magazine that provides good notes on  Reasoning & Mathematics.
    Assumption :

  1. It will have some effect on those who read .
  2. People always wait for latest Notes on reasoning & Mathematics.

Ans. Only 1

6. Statement : If you are a classical singer we have challenging job for you. 
    Assumption :

  1. we need a classical singer
  2. you are a classical singer.

Ans. Only one

7. Statement : Like a mad man I decided to follow him.
    Assumption :

  1. I am a mad man.
  2. I am not a mad man.

Ans. Either 1 or 2

8. Statement : All the workers are here by instructed to reach the factory by 8:30 am.
    Assumption :

  1. Some of the worker will not arrived at the factory in time.
  2. Worker will follow the strict warning in the notice.

Ans. Both true

9. Statement : You can't solve syllogism question without constructing a diagram (Venn). Difficult question of syllogism need Venn diagram solving, A teacher tells his students.
    Assumption :

  1. The students are not intelligent.
  2. Problem cannot be solved.

Ans. Both False
